Automation of a complex transfer operation using a polar manipulator
Purpose – The objective of this paper included developing a polar robot (SPBot) for rotating and transferring car engine block (CEB) around and along two different axes in a confined workspace envelope. Design/methodology/approach – The complex transfer operations of the CEB requires sweeping complete surface of the half sphere, and thus a polar robot is best suited to such a task in a confined space. Considering the limited space for this operation, a specially designed manipulator is built comprising 2 degrees of freedom driven by electrical servo motors. Also due to the special form of CEB, an especially designed pneumatic gripper is developed. Kinematics models, static and dynamic equations, together with trajectory planning for such a manipulator are described. Findings – The high-speed complex transfer in a limited environment is successfully implemented. Originality/value – The developed polar robot provides for complex transfer operations that significantly increases the speed of the product line and thus reducing the cycle time from 60?s using manpower to just 20?s using the robot
Kinematics analysis of 6-DOF parallel micro-manipulators with offset u-joints : a case study
This paper analyses the kinematics of a special 6-DOF parallel micro-manipulator with offset RR-joint configuration. Kinematics equations are derived and numerical methodologies to solve the inverse and forward kinematics are presented. The inverse and forward kinematics of such robots compared with those of 6-UCU parallel robots are more complicated due to the existence of offsets between joints of RR-pairs. The characteristics of RR-pairs used in this manipulator are investigated and kinematics constraints of these offset U-joints are mathematically explained in order to find the best initial guesses for the numerical solution. Both inverse and forward kinematics of the case study 6-DOF parallel micro-manipulator are modelled and computational analyses are performed to numerically verify accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed methodologies
A Review of Machine Learning-based Security in Cloud Computing
Cloud Computing (CC) is revolutionizing the way IT resources are delivered to
users, allowing them to access and manage their systems with increased
cost-effectiveness and simplified infrastructure. However, with the growth of
CC comes a host of security risks, including threats to availability,
integrity, and confidentiality. To address these challenges, Machine Learning
(ML) is increasingly being used by Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) to reduce the
need for human intervention in identifying and resolving security issues. With
the ability to analyze vast amounts of data, and make high-accuracy
predictions, ML can transform the way CSPs approach security. In this paper, we
will explore some of the most recent research in the field of ML-based security
in Cloud Computing. We will examine the features and effectiveness of a range
of ML algorithms, highlighting their unique strengths and potential
limitations. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current
state of ML in cloud security and to shed light on the exciting possibilities
that this emerging field has to offer.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.

Force measurement capability for robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery systems
An automated laparoscopic instrument capable of non-invasive measurement of tip/tissue interaction forces for direct application in robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery systems_ is introduced in this paper. It has the capability to measure normal grasping forces as well as lateral interaction forces without any sensor mounted on the tip jaws. Further to non-invasive actuation of the tip, the proposed instrument is also able to change the grasping direction during surgical operation. Modular design of the instrument allows conversion between surgical modalities (e.g., grasping, cutting, and dissecting). The main focus of this paper is on evaluation of the grasping force capability of the proposed instrument. The mathematical formulation of fenestrated insert is presented and its non-linear behaviour is studied. In order to measure the stiffness of soft tissues, a device was developed that is also described in this paper. Tissue characterisation experiments were conducted and results are presented and analysed here. The experimental results verify the capability of the proposed instrument in accurately measuring grasping forces and in characterising artificial tissue samples of varying stiffness.<br /
Motion analysis of a robotic assisted surgery and microsurgery system - experimental verification
Motion analysis of a parallel robot assisted minimally invasive surgery/microsurgery system (PRAMiSS) and the control structures enabling it to achieve milli/micromanipulations under the constraint of moving through a fixed penetration point or so-called remote centre-of-motion (RCM) are presented in this article. Two control algorithms are proposed suitable for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) with submillimeter accuracy and for minimally invasive micro-surgery (MIMS) with submicrometer accuracy. The RCM constraint is performed without having any mechanical constraint. Control algorithms also apply orientation constraint preventing the tip to orient relative to the soft tissues due to the robot movements. Experiments were conducted to verify accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed control algorithms for MIS and MIMS operations. The experimental results demonstrate accuracy and performance of the proposed position control algorithms
Modular instrument for a haptically-enabled robotic surgical system (HeroSurg)
To restore the sense of touch in robotic surgical systems, a modular force feedback-enabled laparoscopic instrument is developed and employed in a robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgical system (HeroSurg). Strain gauge technology is incorporated into the instrument to measure tip/tissue lateral interaction forces. The modularity feature of the proposed instrument makes it interchangeable between various tip types of different functionalities, e.g., cutter, grasper, and dissector, without losing force sensing capability. Series of experiments are conducted and results are reported to evaluate force sensing capability of the instrument. The results reveal mean errors of 1.32 g and 1.98° in the measurements of tip/tissue load magnitude and direction across all experiments, respectively
Remote centre-of-motion control algorithms of 6-RRCRR parallel robot assisted surgery system (PRAMiSS)
In this paper a 6-RRCRR parallel robot assisted minimally invasive surgery/microsurgery system (PRAMiSS) is introduced. Remote centre-of-motion (RCM) control algorithms of PRAMiSS suitable for minimally invasive surgery and microsurgery are also presented. The programmable RCM approach is implemented in order to achieve manipulation under the constraint of moving through the fixed penetration point. Having minimised the displacements of the mobile platform of the parallel micropositioning robot, the algorithms also apply orientation constraint to the instrument and prevent the tool tip to orient due to the robot movements during the manipulation. Experimental results are provided to verify accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed RCM control algorithms for minimally invasive surgery
